Iwo Jima memorial gets facelift
(Washington-AP) November 28, 2005 - The Iwo Jima Memorial is getting renovated.
The National Park Service says the $3 million project is aimed at improving the plaza and lighting surrounding the statue, which depicts Marines raising a flag above the World War II battleground.
The bronze statue was dedicated in 1954. It's located in Arlington, Virginia and faces Washington, DC.
A Park Service spokesman describes the project as a general rehabilitation of the 78-foot-high memorial. He says the most noticeable changes are being made to the cracking sidewalks. Crews also will inspect the inside of the statue and correct any problems.
The restoration is expected to continue through April. The memorial remains open to visitors.
