View Full Version : A question on reenlistment

It has been nearly 9 years since I served. I find myself wondering if I have more to give back to The Corps. Hell, they put me through college (and I am not just talking about the financial part), gave me the drive to accomplish personal and financial goals.

Here is my question...

Has anyone ever reenlisted after so many years away?

I have often thought about it, but like many of you, I created a life with a wife and career and never thought it possible. Recently I met with a reserve Marine who thought I would really getting something out of joining the reserves. It peaked my interest enough for me to ask this question.

Anyway, I just wanted to get some feedback from you all, before I speak to a recruiter and get laughed out of the office.

Thanks in advance and Semper Fi!

I know an active duty CWO4 that had 8 years broken time as enlisted... he is doing well...

Beyond the question about if they will allow it or not.... can you still pt and make ht/wt/bf? Just a thought.....

35 years old or younger? Ya ain't busted up? Shouldn't be a problem. Just make sure the Ol Lady knows exactly what she's in for Marine! Go for it! Had a similiar conversation with a Marine last night. He's talked with a recruiter after four years out. I'll ask him to post some info next time I see him and maybe get his recruiter to post something as well. See what I can do

Wow... 8 years huh. That is very interesting. As far as pt is concerned... I believe my 3 mile is still under 28 mins. Of course that is just leisure jogging with the wife.

I wonder what training is required for someone who has been separated so long.

Thank you very much for responding Top!

Yeah... the Mrs. and I have talked about on and off since I started considering it. The wife has reservations, of course, but supports me 100% if... as she puts it, "I am certain of comittment".

Her father is retired Air Force and military life is nothing new to her, of course as well all know, The Corps is another thing entirely.

Once again I appreciate everyones input.

The BEST person able to give you the straight scoop on your question is the recruiter at your local Reserve unit.

Also, heed the words of the Top. Unless you are an irreplaceable water walker, I doubt if you could get a waiver on pt or ht/wt/bf requirements.

ALSO, if you have any chance at all, NOW would be the best time to check into it. I read a report that Marine retention was at 50% of goal, and we are only two months into the fiscal year.

I have a feeling that there will be a lot of good Marines who will be denied reenlistment and may opt for the Reserves.

Evening gents., <br />

I am currently looking into the same thing CDog. I have spoken to the Prior Service Recruiting (PSR)out of Jax, FL, he said he could get me back into the IRR or the AR... although...

I'm on Recruiting Duty Right now and these are the current requierments.

Take your age minus your years of service. If it equals less than 35 you should be good to go. When we run a waiver for age (for someone going back to active duty) they must run a full PFT and meet curent ht/wt/bf. But be prepaired. You may have been a Sgt when you got out but MAY have to come back as a LCpl.

If you want Reserve, go to the nearest reserve unit and see the Prior Service Recruiter.

Good luck and Semper Fi

That's what I like about this place. You ask a serious, valid question, and you usually get three serious responses.

1. Historical, (from ancient memory banks) like mine.

2. Current and practical, like ssgtp_diddy's.

3. Esoteric, with documentation. like bones's.

Ask a stupid or smart-ass question, and you get a different type of answer.

Example: "What is the difference between hard-core and soft-core pornography?"

Answer. Soft-core pornography will give you a soft-on.

OR, the classic, "It depends on what your definition of is, is."

(For those who follow more than one thread, or one forum: Yes, thank you, I'm younger than I thought I was, and was able to pick the kids up myself.)

Esoteric. Dang, that's a big word! ;) Is is, uh, well, it just is is all!
