Thanksgiving is just another day at war for Marines in Iraq
KRON

QAIM, Iraq Americans serving in Iraq are observing Thanksgiving.

Despite the turkey and trimmings, it's not an easy celebration for many of them.Members of the Marine Corp's First Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion are spending the day on patrol along the dangerous Syrian border. Their mission is to intercept smugglers and foreign fighters.Huddling together in the cold, they spoke to an Associated Press reporter about comrades they've lost in Iraq and the family and friends they're missing back home. Marine Corporal Brian Zwart of Fruitport, Michigan, says, "Serving my country is important but losing friends makes me more thankful for what I have and for what I used to take for granted."Lance Corporal Kyle Maxwell, a 21-year-old from Petaluma, California, says he could be sitting on a couch back home watching football with his dad.

Instead he's driving an armored personnel carrier in Iraq.
