Semper Fi Marines Attend Postal Service Tribute to USMC Heroes
Sgt. Major Dan Daly One of Four Honored
By Carla Santella

OohRah! In celebration of the 230th birthday of the United States Marine Corps, the US Postal Service has released its Distinguished Marine Stamp Series. As one of the faces looking back at you from one of the stamps is that of Sgt. Major Daniel J. Daly, Glen Cove native son, the Glen Cove Post Office held an unveiling of the stamps on Nov. 17.

large crowd of men and women, in and out of uniform, came to the post office to be part of the celebration. Also on hand were postal officials and city officials, as well as Barbara Ann Ransweiler-Hartcourt, great-great niece of Sgt. Major Daly, and her son T.J., the great-great-great nephew of the Marine. Mina DeGuzman, supervisor of customer service at the Glen Cove Post Office, introduced the keynote speakers for the day. First up was Thomas F. Rosati, who remarked that a large percentage of postal workers come from a military background. He praised our fighting troops, calling them a beacon of hope and adding, "I applaud all Marines as well as members of every section of the US Armed Services."

Mayor Mary Ann Holzkamp recalled the summer of 2003 when Glen Cove held its first Dan Daly Parade. The mayor said, "I was proud to be a part of that event, and I am happy to be here today for this unveiling. There couldn't be a better time for the Post Office to honor the US Marine Corps, with our men and women now fighting overseas."

Lt. Colonel Thomas May, executive officer for the 1st Marine Corps District praised Sgt. Major Daly and said, "Every Marine knows of the exploits of Dan Daly. We try every day to live up to his legacy and that of all Marine heroes. They are part of what makes the corps what it is, what makes us who we are. We put country and the corps before self."

Ms. Ransweiler-Hartcourt spoke lovingly of her uncle, one of only two Marines to receive two Medals of Honor for two separate achievements. She said Sgt. Major Daly is perhaps most remembered for his battle cry as he led his troops into battle at Belleau Wood in June of 1918.

Ms. DeGuzman and Mr. Rosati presented Mayor Holzkamp with a poster depicting the new stamps and asked that it be hung in city hall. Ms. Ransweiler-Hartcourt also received a poster.
