Family of slain Marine reports scam

The Pojoaque family of a Marine who died in Iraq said Monday that someone is fraudulently collecting money in his name. Lance Cpl. Jonathan Grant died in early May when a military vehicle he was riding in ran over a roadside bomb. Funeral services were held here later that month for the father of two, who is buried at Santa Fe National Cemetery.

When his fiancée heard that people she knew had recently been approached by someone carrying a picture of Jonathan and their Jonathan Grant children, she was surprised and angry. The fraudulent solicitors were asking for cash for the funeral, but those services were paid for by the Marine Corps months ago.

“I was very shocked that somebody would do that,” said Eva Grant, who was engaged to Jonathan Grant when he died and now uses his name. “It is terrible. I don’t know how anybody could do this.”

Eva Grant said she was deeply troubled that any person or organization would use the Marine’s tragic death for monetary gain.

Now the family is trying to spread the word that someone is acting in bad faith.

Jonathan Grant was assigned to D Company 4th Reconnaissance Battalion based in Albuquerque. He and his fiancée , a teacher at Pojoaque’s Pablo Roybal Elementary School, had planned to marry next spring.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department asked anyone who is approached by solicitors on behalf of the dead Marine to report the matter to the department at 428-3710 .
