Gemtlemen,

I received this E-mail today. There is only one or two ways they could have gotten my e-mail address, Leatherneck being one of them. I do not have a complaint about it, if it is real, but now days one has to be careful about who one sends money to, for all I know this could be some 16 year old kid making a bank account for himself.

Does anyone here know if this is the real deal or not? Who better to ask then you guys? I have not checked out the website as yet, but in the case that it is not real, I thought I should inform you gys of it.

Fellow Americans:

I'm so very proud of my son who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He knew the mission was important, and he understood that the war in Iraq was central to the war on terrorism.

Sadly, my son (Lance Cpl. Michael Jason Williams) lost his life in combat in
this war. My life changed forever when I got a knock at my door, informing me that Michael had been killed in action. My son is my hero.

As a father, I can't tell you what a gut-wrenching blow it was, and still is.
Not a day goes by I don't think about my child. But the Anti-American, anti-war crowd that pretends to 'support the military, but not the mission' are a pack of liars.

Some people, like Cindy Sheehan and Michael Moore, have tried to exploit the
death of Michael and others who lost their lives in Iraq, in order that they
might advance their far left political agenda.

If we don't stand up to the Cindy Sheehans, Michael Moore's and the politicans who are using Michael's death to further their agenda of undermining our Commander-in-Chief, then Michael Jason William's devotion to this great country will be rendered meaningless.

I know from bitter experience.

I am a Vietnam veteran.

I don't know what is so hard for the people in today's anti-war movement to
understand. Radical Islamic Extremists are determined to kill Americans and
destroy our way of life.

In Iraq the terrorist insurgency is led by a fellow named Zarqawi, his position
is the leader of "Al Qaeda in Iraq" yet the anti-war crowd marches
through our streets proclaiming that the war in Iraq has nothing to do with the war against terrorism.

Well, I've had enough of the misguided, anti-military and even anti-American
rhetoric from the anti-war crowd. They seem to be rooting for our enemies more than our own troops at times.

So I've decided to help fight back.

I've leant my voice and my story - and the story of my son's sacrifice for his
nation - to Move America Forward, for them to use in a national radio ad
campaign.

Just to clarify...Leatherneck does not give out email addresses to anyone at anytime. The only way to contact people via from Leatherneck is to be a registered member. Even then, it does not provide an email address. iIt provides a form that is sent via Leatherneck's internal mailer. Meaning the sender never sees an email address unless someone replies.

Your posted email does appear in 4 Google search results (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22careypi@juno.com%22&btnG=Google+Search&meta=). A good email harvester could easily sell them a 'probable consumer list', based on where your email address is publically posted.

Jerry,

Don't take things so personal, Jerry. I said, quote: "There is only one or two ways they could have gotten my e-mail address, Leatherneck being one of them. For the record, there is no verification process involved in joining the site, and we don't know if we are taking to fellow Marines, or to the Al Qaeda, or to a newspaper reporter. So it pays to be safe. We have had posers on here before!

I posted my e-mail address on the site with full knowledge of its possible use, I was just alerting others of the e-mail I received. As it appears, maybe it may be quite a legitimate appeal for funds. I was asking if anyone knew of the appeal, and whether or not it was a real deal.

I would guess that the inmates at Vacaville State Prison have access to PC's.

Old Marine,

Actually, that is my opinion on some of the people on this site.

Let us take 'Semper Fi Marines, 7th Marines' site. They verify that you were members of the unit (7th Marines), or at least a member of the Marines at large, or its supporting forces first. When I was signing on to the site (Semper Fi...), the coordinator asked for my Marine information, and when the system cleared me to enter the site, he knew the dates of my wounds and the status of my discharge, and my dates of service.

Also, on the '****************' site they have a section to check if there is grounds to suspect that the person is not a Marine and that verification is needed of the person, as well as any questions of battle ribbons, Decorations, and the units that were listed by the presenter as being ‘real deal’ decorations and units served in by these men and women.

I know that on AOL, every third guy you talk to on the site is as former MARINE RECON CMH Metal winner that served in Vietnam, or some other war, but 'there' it doesn't mean anything, 'here' it does, and 'here' there is no verification process of to whom it is claiming to be a Marine on the site at all.

You do know it was something that I was unsure of, because I remembered the name as being a 31 year old Phoenix Arizona Marine, who joined late in his life, as far as Marines go, and who left behind a Fiance behind in the Phoenix, Arizona area.

Williams was a fine man, but he was an Arizona Resident and a construction-businessman in Arizona for a number of years, and he followed the led of former Arizona Cardinals Defensive Safety Pat Tilman in his joining of the military, Tilman into the Army Rangers, and he in the service of the US Marine Corps.

This may be a reason why I had a doubt as to the veracity of the article and the collection of monies from a California group, especially from Vacaville, California, the home of Cindy Sheehan.

I took no offense. Just wanted to make it clear for anyone who read the post.

As for checking to see if a Marine is a Marine...this is not the site. There are other sites you mentioned that do that. We don't need another. Just like we don't need another site that allows people to bash one another or talk trash to one another openly. This is not that site and never will be. Regardless of the rants and raves of a very slim few.

The reason why this has been the top Marine site out there and remains the top Marine site is because we don't allow that type of BS here. These other sites (not talking about an actual unit, division or association website) are a dime a dozen. They are around for a little while then they die off. Mainly because of people like Mr. Carey who think that the 1st Ammendment is a right to demonstrate ones ignorance and lack of common sense. Then wants to whine and cry about their rights being violated. Those people chase away most of the good members and the site dies.

Notice that this site does not have the policies or procedures in place like those other sites you mentioned. We don't open question people in the forums. Yet somehow we get very few troublemakers, phonies and wannabes. In fact, we probably get less. Hmmmm....why is that? By the way, nothing is full proof. Every site and organization has someone that slips through the wire from time to time.

Jerry

I have been associated with this site and it's former for up to 6 - 7+ years now. I've seen Phonies come and go. I've seen Hashers come and go. I've seen supporters come and go.

I have also checked into a few other sites and even one mentioned in this post. I was told I was not a Marine and never was and if I did not stop claiming I was there would be trouble. Then again about 6 months later I received a call telling me it was ok to come back onto that site. "There had been a mistake", he said. Yea Right! There had been a mistake.

I see what goes on at other sites. Some are good places to visit and some are not.

I and my 'band' will always call Gerald Shaffer's site(s) home. Honesty, Courage and Commitment to the finest Marine Corps site is here. Many fine Marines are here and many fine Marines have been made here. Many persons here call each other a Membe of their Family. We are Family here.

You can take that and deposit it into your bank.

My opinion.

.... and I thought I was the only one to see the above. The old 'my way or the highway' BS only works on newbies and the meek.

I love it when posts appear, and interwoven in the missive are such writings as, 'did I mention was wounded a whole bunch of times' or ' I got decoration upon decoration', etc., etc., etc. REMF's and Wannabee's talk the most and are the easiest to spot.

The Marines I know or have met, aren't of the braggado type, and believe me, you can tell if they are real or not.

Sometimes, the biggest boasters are the littlest of men, looking for that tiny smidgeon of security, since they appear to be so insecure.

My point exactly...Usually doesn't take a rocket scientist nor a public grilling to figure out who is a phoney and who is not. Questions can be handled offline and the garbage kept ff the boards.

Funny...but I just got a PM from a Marine telling me off all his ribbons and medals. Guess thats exactly the type of person you are talking about...
