Two Marines draw jail time for counterfeiting

Japan Update

A pair of young Marines will spend nearly two years behind bars for counterfeiting Japanese currency, then passing it in Okinawa bars.

Marine Lance Corporals Chad Adkins, 22, and Jesse Trammel, 24, had confessed to forging Y5,000 bills, then using the phony money to pay for drinks at bars in the Camp Foster area. The men said they spent the money while on a couple of Spring visits to the Crazy Horse Bar.

The Marines admitted they used a color copier in their barracks to print up the phony money. The prosecutor was asking for three-year jail terms.

Naha District Court Judge Nobuyuki Yokota had called the men and their crime “cunning and heinous” because of the high technology way they counterfeited the bills, then spent them in secluded spots in bars where they wouldn’t be noticed.

He was a bit lenient, though, and reduced the sentence after deciding the small number of faked bills didn’t warrant more than the 20 months in prison that he finally settled on. The counterfeited Y5,000 bills were valued at little more than $130. Adkins and Trammel were assigned to 3rd Force Service Support Group in the motor pool.
