Marine icons immortalized in new stamps
By: North County Times -

CAMP PENDLETON ---- As tens of thousands of Marines serve in Afghanistan and Iraq in the first wars of the 21st century, the U.S. Postal Service has honored four Marine icons from the last century's conflicts in a series of commemorative postage stamps to be released Nov. 10.

The "Distinguished Marines" commemorative stamps depict icons from wars of the first half of the 20th century, including Sgt. John Basilone; Sgt. Major Daniel Joseph Daly; Lt. Gen. John A. Lejeune; and Lt. Gen. Lewis "Chesty" Puller.

The release of the first stamps will be celebrated in official ceremonies Nov. 10 at the U.S. Marine Barracks in Washington, D.C., and at Camp Pendleton.

The Pendleton ceremony begins at 8 a.m. outside the Semper Fit Paige Fieldhouse.

Among those dedicating the new stamp at the Pendleton ceremony will be San Diego District Manager John E. Platt; Brig. Gen. Michael Lehnert, commander of the newly formed Marine Corps Installations West; and Maj. Gen. Richard Natonski, commander of the 1st Marine Division.
