Uncivilizied War Protestors
Written by Warner Todd Huston

We’ve been seeing it more and more: anti-war protestors gathering to protest the war in places where a person who truly cared about others just wouldn’t dream of going to protest.
We have two recent examples of this untoward phenomenon. This October, a militant anti-gay group was ignorant enough to attempt to protest the funeral of a soldier in Chelsea, Oklahoma, causing consternation among the mourners.
These uncivilized cretins attempted to disrupt the funeral of Army Staff Sgt. John Doles, 29, of Chelsea, who was killed on September 30 in an ambush in Afghanistan. Somehow, these crazies imagine that the war on terror is some sort of punishment leveled by God upon America because we somehow love gays.
Even more unbelievable, these people that protested at Sgt. Dole’s funeral claim to be from a church group!
Another disgusting protest occurred last August out in front of Walter Reed Hospital, a place many of our grievously wounded soldiers are sent to rehabilitate from their wounds.
In a place of healing, where our heroic soldiers are sent to begin the long road to recovery, these reprobates thought it a good idea to protest, interrupting their convalescence.
These shameless wretches set up mock caskets and held signs that told these wounded soldiers and their families that they “Maimed for a Lie” or had been wounded solely to enrich Haliburton.
Now, I am not here saying that protests should be shut down or that they are somehow illegal in and of themselves. Certainly one of the chief aspects of a democracy is the ability for citizens to protest government policy without fear of government retribution.
But, we are all still people. And a certain level of kindness and consideration for our fellow citizens--not to mention attention to comportment and etiquette--must be recognized or we most certainly will descend into such nihilism as even the protests would no longer matter a hill of beans.
Of course, passions are high in today’s America, but picketing a funeral is just as low as anyone could get. And the coarsening of America continues with this obscene new protesting venue. Such people should be excoriated for their ignorance and the hate they evince for their fellow citizens. Further, such people who place their political leanings higher than the lives of their fellow citizens make their causes seem less than worthy.
I have a few words for these hateful creeps: protest all you like, but leave the families of the wounded and dead to their personal, private grief. And, for Heaven’s sake, learn some manners.
