Marines boat ride terrified me says new James Bond

NEW James Bond star Daniel Craig arrived in superspy style yesterday.

But the new 007 looked to have said a "double oh, no" to doing his own stunts in the movie Casino Royale.

As the 37-year-old actor got off the Royal Marines speedboat which brought him along the Thames to his unveiling as Bond, he revealed the high-speed ride had terrified him.

He said: "I'd like to thank the Royal Marines for bringing me in like that - and scaring the s ** t out of me.

Convoy Craig, who made his name in the TV series Our Friends In The North and recently starred in the gangster movie Layer Cake, was raced up the river to meet the waiting media in a convoy of Marines boats.

He posed on the gangplank of HMS President with Bond producer Barbara Broccoli and revealed he'd been a Bond fan since childhood.

Asked how he felt, the beaming star replied: "I'm speechless at the moment." But later he revealed that although he only learned he was the new Bond on Monday, he had always been confident he would win the coveted role.

The Chester-born star, who will become the first blond Bond, added: "I felt good about it."

Producers Broccoli and Michael G Wilson said the Bond team believed Craig would bring a "contemporary edge to the role".

Wilson added they had had a long-time ambition to film Casino Royale, Ian Fleming's first Bond novel.

He said: "We are thrilled Daniel Craig will play the character of 007. Daniel is a superb actor."

Craig, who played Angelina Jolie's love interest in Tomb Raider, dodged questions about own romantic life, which has recently been rumoured to rival that of noted ladies' man Bond.

He refused to say whether he would prefer former lover Kate Moss or Sienna Miller - who was rumoured to have cheated on Jude Law with him - as his Bond girl.

He was happy, though, to reveal that his first reaction on learning he was to replace Pierce Brosnan as Bond, was: "I need a drink."

But the down-to-earth actor, who is fond of a pint of beer, didn't say if he would be switching to Bond's trademark dry martini, "shaken not stirred
