CHILDREN may daydream about putting their teachers in a headlock - and for some lucky pupils it became a reality.

When the Royal Marine Commando display team invaded Soham Village College for the morning they led pupils through a series of self defence lessons.

Duncan Carmichael, director of physical education at the school, said: "They taught them how to look after themselves through unarmed combat and self defence. The Marines showed them how to disarm someone if they were grabbed around the neck and taught them other techniques."

Mr Carmichael and other staff members volunteered to work with the children and soon found them relishing the opportunity to take a swipe at them.

He joked: "They really enjoyed trying to beat us up. It certainly wasn't the usual PE lesson. They all absolutely loved it and it allowed them to explore activities outside the usual netball and football."

The Marines arrived to promote health and fitness and commanded pupils' attention as soon as they walked through the door.

Lt Commander Lee Thorne, regional business manager for Navy and Marine recruitment, said: "The commando team always love coming out to schools and working with students.

"We hope in return the students get a bit of an insight into the options the Navy and Marines open up. What I can guarantee is that they will all be a bit fitter by the end of the day."

And it seems to be working as pupils who attended similar sessions last year have already expressed an interest in finding a career with the Marines in the future.

Mr Carmichael added: "The children all get stuck in and keep asking me when they are coming back, but we will have to recover first!"
