Big Bear City man served 37 years in Marines

BIG BEAR CITY - As a U.S. Marine, Addison "Woody" Woodard answered the call to defend his country in three wars.

Much decorated, Woodard was wounded in action three times.

The career military man, joined the Corps as a teenager in 1943 when World War II was at its hottest. It was the beginning of a 37-year career.

The longtime Big Bear City resident died Oct. 1 at St. Bernardine Medical Center in San Bernardino. The cause of death was not available. He was 80.

Woodard was born July 16, 1925, in Battle Creek, Mich., and lived in Big Bear City for about 25 years.

During his many years in the Marines, he saw combat on Iwo Jima during World War II and fought in the Korean War. He served four tours in Vietnam.

Woodard's decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with combat V, the Purple Heart with two clusters, the Cross of Gallantry and the Navy Commendation with combat V.

He retired in 1980 as a sergeant major.

Woodard was a member of the Marine Corps Drill Instructors Association and the Episcopal Church.

Survivors include his wife, Audrey "June" Woodard; his daughter, Victoria Lee Blair of Idaho Falls, Idaho; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Bobbitt Memorial Chapel, 1299 E. Highland Ave., San Bernardino. Services and military honors will be at 11:45 a.m. Thursday at Riverside National Cemetery, Staging Area 4, 22495 Van Buren Blvd.

Rest in Peace Sgtmaj. He and I had two simularities we were Marines and we share tha same birth date.
