1/5 back home after third Iraq deployment
About 260 members of 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, returned to Camp Pendleton, Calif., late at night Sept. 28 after a seven-month deployment to Iraq, according to a Marine Corps release.
During their deployment, the battalion's Marines and sailors conducted "stability and support operations" in and around Ramadi. This was the battalion's third deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The battalion is the second to complete a third tour in Iraq. The first was 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines, which returned this summer.

Afghan forces lead election security
Marines and sailors with 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, took a back-seat role in providing security for Jalalabad, Afghanistan, during the parliamentary elections held there Sept. 18, according to a Corps release.
Local government and Afghan national security forces provided most of the security, with Marines and sailors held mostly in reserve. The Marines were at key points throughout the area to respond to requests for help from the Afghans.
According to the release, allowing Afghan forces to conduct security showed residents that their government could protect them, giving them greater faith in their representatives.

4th Marines, Thais plan combat ops
The command staffs of 4th Marines and 1st Royal Thai Marine Artillery Regiment participated in a joint training exercise Sept. 14-16 in Sattahip, Thailand, to further the two nations' military cooperation, according to a Corps release.
The exercise involved a computer-generated scenario featuring the invasion of a neighboring country by a belligerent nation.
The scenario challenged U.S. and Thai decision-makers to plan all phases of military operations, according to the report.

Marines wrap up Katrina relief mission
A specially tailored Marine task force ordered to the Gulf Coast following Hurricane Katrina is headed home after wrapping up its work in some of the region's most devastated communities, according to a Sept. 30 Corps release.
More than 1,200 active-duty Marines will return to their home base at Camp Lejeune, N.C., in the coming week and resume preparations for a scheduled deployment next spring.
The Marines, part of II Marine Expeditionary Force, were among thousands of troops summoned by President Bush to bolster relief efforts in the days following the hurricane.
In the first two weeks after the Aug. 29 storm, the Marines searched more than 5,000 homes; rescued 610 stranded residents; transported nearly 1,500 other displaced citizens; delivered 2 million pounds of supplies; and cleared debris from more than 1,000 buildings.
