Hurricane Ophelia did more than $1 million worth of damage to Camp Lejeune - half of that at Riseley Pier alone, a base spokesman said Monday.

The pier off the coast of Onslow Beach suffered about $650,000 in damage and was the most significant storm damage the base suffered, said 1st Lt. Clark Carpenter.

"Half of Riseley Pier appears to have gone missing," he said, adding that the pier is closed and locked up. "We ask that folks don't try and get on that pier. It's dangerous, and we need to make sure that people stay away from it."

Overall, last week's Category 1 hurricane caused more than $1.2 million worth of damage to the base. The rest of the costs include fixing electrical infrastructure such as downed power lines, roof repairs and debris cleanup, Carpenter said.

"Many repairs have been made, and we're certainly working as fast as possible to make any others, especially those involving quality of life for our Marines," he said.

Carpenter could not say if the amount of damage was greater or less than anticipated.

"I think with any destructive-weather event, it's very difficult to predict exactly what will happen, we know from living in this area that hurricanes can do a tremendous amount of damage," he said. "The most important thing is to prepare ourselves, our personnel and families for these types of occurrences."

There is no timetable for repairs to Riseley Pier, but Carpenter said the process is in the planning stages.
