All right, well, I've been wanting to be a Marine for who knows how long now, and I just DEPed in about three weeks ago with an open contract, until I figured out what I want to do. I'm already certified in welding, machining, and heavy equipment/diesel mechanics and want to get into fire fighting, legal services, intelligence, or anything to get some other experiences under my belt. I wouldn't mind doing infantry or any combat related MOS but I want to do something that I'm really interested in. The hard part though is my vision test say I'm color blind, and that narrows me down. I'm really looking at legal services but don't want a "boring" job, and I don't know if I could get into intelligence. Basically what I'm asking you guys is if you can tell me about your MOS and what you like and dislike about them, also what you know about other jobs and there pro's and con's. What do you guys suggest for me to do? I also would like to get a college degree in mechanical engineering while I'm in, so that's another high interest for me. Thank You.

My MOS is 0300 Infantry. The reason i chose that MOS is because I want to get into law enforcement when I get out of the Corps. I also wanted to do Intel, but my ASVAB scores weren't too high. I leave for boot camp 9/19. Motivated as hell! OOORAH!!!

There's not a bad job in the Marine Corps and you could gain great experiences from any of them. I was a 1391 Bulk Fuel Specialist, 0151 Administration Clerk, 8411 Recruiter and 8412 Career Recruiter. I now fly around the country putting in Point of Sale Systems for Retail and Hospitality Businesses. Helping them develope their business rules and back end databases for the systems. Not related to anything I did during my 20 years in the Corps. It's not what you do while you're in the Corps that dictates what you will do with your future. The most important thing you will get from the Corps is not the Technical skills but the Self Discipline, Motivation, and all of the intangible things your Recruiter talked with you about that will make the difference in your life down the road.
Best of luck to you!

There really isn't any MOS in the Marine Corps that will help you out on your way to law enforcement. The Military experience in itself will for sure be your foot in the door anywhere you go but don't pick a specific MOS just because you feel a law enforcement agency will look at that billet as more beneficial to your career. I'm 5811 Military Police and even my billet doesn't help out much more than any other MOS. Now if you are referring to 0300 Infantry helping you out on a personal level, I would have to say the same still applies. Honestly, in law enforcement if a suspect gets froggy on you is your training on how to effectively fire an M240G medium machinegun really going to help diffuse the situation?

Gearhead.. I dont think you should set your mind on Intel.. there are not many slots avail for it.. I personally know a person who has double master degrees, and he had to wait a long time for a slot.. he is no slacker.. plus he is a damn good Marine.. Intel slots are pretty rare and the entrance requirements for it are VERY high.

Definetly dont go open contract...youll end up in the infantry and then youll be whining that " Well I didnt know I was going to end up in Iraq" . Only go infantry if youre ready to hump hump and hump.
Plus its a good way to travel all over the world , meet cool and interesting people, learn about their culture and then kill them.
Go infantry if you want to fast rope , spy rig, do alot of snoopin and poopin , and especially if you want to " blow sh*t up !" or be and admin clerk ...i heard thats a cool job also :)
Remember , in the Marine Corps everything revolves to suport the infantry . So just remember this ...if you cant be an athelete , be a jockstrap.

I would really like to do infantry, and I'm not worried about going to iraq, it's somethings that I actually am looking forward to if I get the chance. However infantry just isn't what I'm looking to learn.
