Miramar to stage record-setting human yellow ribbon

OCEANSIDE, Calif. — Want to be a world-record holder? Got plans Oct. 15? If not, you — and 4,999 others — have a chance to be part of history at the annual Miramar Air Show, where 5,000 people will don a yellow T-shirt and form up at 9 a.m. to create a large, if not record-setting, yellow ribbon.

Officials at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, in San Diego, aim to form the "World’s Largest Human Yellow Ribbon" on Oct. 15. As far as they know, no one has claimed that title yet. Officials submitted the challenge to the Guinness World Records group, but hadn’t heard yet whether it has been accepted, Staff Sgt. Chad McMeen, an air station spokesman, said Sept. 12.

The commemorative "yellow ribbon" T-shirts cost $7 each and can be bought at Wal-Mart stores in the San Diego area starting Sept. 12, McMeen said. Proceeds from the sale of the T-shirts will help fund quality-of-life programs for service members and their families through the air station’s Marine Corps Community Services office.

The air show, set for Oct. 14-16, will feature the Navy’s Blue Angels flight demonstration team, along with military and vintage aircraft. The air show is free and open to the public. More information is available on the Web.
