SPARKS, Nev. — The father of a Nevada Marine who died last week during a training exercise at Camp Pendleton said he’s awaiting autopsy results but suspects his son died from an accidental injury.

Pfc. Nicholas Robert Wilde, 22, Sparks, had recently completed 12 weeks of boot camp and was among an elite few Marines selected for the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion.

Searchers found him unconscious in a wilderness area on the base last Wednesday afternoon after he missed a scheduled radio check, according to the North County Times of Escondido, Calif.

A helicopter flew him to a base hospital, where he died. His death remains under investigation.

Wilde’s father, Bruce Wilde of Sparks, said he has talked with military officials and members of his son’s battalion since the death. He said he is convinced the unit was well-prepared for the training in terms of physical condition and supplies and he believes the session was properly supervised.

“I don’t feel that anything happened other than Nick got into a situation that injured him, and he just could not call for help,” Bruce Wilde told the North County Times.

“We never expected anything like this so sudden. I mean, you know, kids go into war, yeah. But he wasn’t really into war; he was just training,” he said.

Family and friends said Wilde was a fun-loving jokester, but he also had a reputation as someone who poured his heart and soul into things he was passionate about. His determination to earn a place in the Marine Corps’ reconnaissance battalion topped that list, relatives said.

Jaymie Davis, a sister, said he was in top physical shape.

“He would want us to be happy. We know he went to heaven and so, that’s assuring,” she told KRNV-TV in Reno.

Bruce Wilde said he and his wife learned of their son’s death when three Marines came to the door of the couple’s Sparks home at 9 p.m. the day he died.

The Department of the Navy performed an autopsy on Nick Wilde’s body, and the family is awaiting news of the results, the father said.

The family is planning a Sept. 3 memorial service for Wilde at New Hope Church in Rancho Penasquitos, Calif. He will be buried the following week in Sparks, Bruce Wilde said.
