Cammies now authorized for travel to, from war zone

Marines headed to Iraq no longer need to save space in their seabags for civilian duds.

In a break from policy, the Corps announced it will let Marines wear cammies on civilian airplanes headed to or from a combat zone.

Until now, devil dogs were required to wear civilian clothes for the trip, but Commandant Gen. Mike Hagee recently decided to do away with that rule.

Hagee decided to lift the restriction after various visits to Iraq, where Marines told him of the difficulties of bringing civilian clothes to theater, said Maj. Jason Johnston, a spokesman for Hagee.

“This policy eases travel for returning Marines who normally do not have civilian attire readily available,” Johnston said.

But just as important, he added, was Hagee’s desire to ensure Marines headed home be recognized for their contributions.

Wearing the utility uniform allows them to stand out more easily from the general public and be recognized, he said.

“It’s nice to have these guys come back from combat and get the recognition,” Johnston said.

The new rule is effective immediately and also applies to Marines headed to combat zones, according an Aug. 1 message announcing the change.

It applies to all Marines and sailors serving with the Corps during travel only.

Uniforms may not be worn on liberty, the message says.
