Ok fellow Poolees, I found something to help test our military knowledge. I found this (http://www.navy.mil/view_single.asp?id=26191) photo while browsing through the Navy's online photo database. Now heres the question, in two parts.

1)Tell me what is wrong with the photo and its accompanying caption. (notice the words in bold)
2)How you came to that conclusion.

Download the hi-res version, it will probably be easier to figure it out that way. Winner gets...**** I dunno, bragging rights.

They aren't Marines

Headgear and BDU Undershirts

Truthfully, Recruit, They are MC Air Wing Cadets (Officers and Warrant Officers, and Enlistedmen looking for a reserve officer commission), and I see collections of Officer bags and enlisted sea bags that can be purchased on a Navy or Marine Base.

Now, unless the duty designations, or base designations, are different than what I would expect them to be, they appear, from this distance anyhow, to be Marines, and for the most part in utilities. Now, if you are talking about the boots, it is difficult to make any determination from this distance.

For the record, Kid, they are called Utility Covers, not headgear, and they are pretty much Marine in nature, although other services are copying the design, added to that, they are wearing Marine Khaki belts, and not Navy black belts, so why not Marines?

Most importantly, they are Officers or Wannabee Officers, and not as squared away as Line Company Enlisted Marines.

As far as the housing, remember the words, Officer and Flight Candidate!

I take that back, probably because I did not look at the High Resulution! They are wearing National Guard Covers and Black Boots!

Definantly NOT :marine:

Covers are wrong
Utility jacket sleeves are rolled up Army style
Utility jacket pockets are 'square' cut instead of angle, as I remenber camo utilities
Sea bags look more Coast guardish (color and sheen)
A Marine unit wouldn't DARE have stuff just laying around not 'covered and aligned'

I wasn't looking at the High Resolution shot when first I looked at it, but when I found it, and I looked closer at it the photo, I could see different things, and I spoke right up. There is nothing wrong with being wrong, that is why they make earasers on pencils! As far as the new Uts, I would have no idea what they look like, but as far as I am concerned, they are NG Troops, not regular Army!

Are you still PO'ed because of the remarks I made about the Canadians have no stones?

I apologize for civilian jargon

I only looked at the picture closely becuase of how disorganized the unit in the picture seemed. Of all the times I have witnessed Marine units, even at a loley buss stop somewhere in Alabama they were squared away. Honestly I think the old AFJROTC unit I was in seemed more uniformed than the bunch in the picture.

Have the old utilities been completly phased out now?

Thanks for what yall all have done or do....

Marines that were Marines before the new digital cammies were authorized, are still authorized to wear the old tiger stripe cammies. I see a Marine every once in awhile wearing the old tiger stripes so I would have to say that no, they are not completely phased out. I can't understand why anyone would want to wear the old cammies. Maybe I had to be there.

Geez, was hoping for a few more wrong guesses before someone came up with it. Good job though, there had to be a few people who didnt know and just didnt post anything. I noticed when I was looking at it and I saw there sleves werent rolled up right, then saw they werent wearing digitals then the round cover on some of them not the pointed Marine one. My guess is Air Force for the branch of service since the only people I've ever seen wearing black undershirts are Airmen. But, then again, I just may have never seen a soldier wearing thier black undershirts. Anyways, what were a bunch of Airmen or Soldiers doing staying in the Marine Barracks in Pensacola?

Answer: State of Florida National Guardsmen, after all, it was in response to a Hurricane that the base was evacuated in the first place.

Truthfully, Gunny, I think that is a Navy Chief's Cover, not a barracks Cover. The material does not have the stretch and the tention a Barracks Cover would have.

If you click on the the link at the bottom it takes you to a differnt photo. In the photo theres a guy wearing the Army dress uniform. The guy is wearing Major insignia on his shoulders and Ssgt. insignia on his Arm. My guess is P-O-S-E-R.

JimmyK,
Was the Major ensignia on the lapel or on the shoulder? I know that you said shoulder but for the life of me I could not determine, without a doubt, that there was a ensignia indicating the rank of Major on the Sergeants shoulder.
I'm not saying that you are wrong. I'm just saying that ever since I destroyed my eyesight reading (yes, reading) Playboy Magazines under the sheets at night, as a young man, my eyes haven't been the same. I just don't see a Major's ensignia. The Sergeant looks pretty solid if you ask me.

Gary,

I thought it was just me that I couldn't see correctly. Still can't get the other page from work though.

Well..............that to. LMAO
Seriously. I learned how to tie my first double windsor following the "How to tie a tie" section back in high school. Yep, it was 8 pages before the good stuff. LMAO
I still know how to tie a double windsor to this day!!

GySgtRet-
I tried opening up the link again and I got a not authorized notice. I may have gotten lucky the first time.
Sorry to hear about your eyes.

Heres the picture in question to everyone who cant access it. Sorry about the quality though I use AOL and it compresses the graphics so they download faster. I turned the compression feature off but then i get that same error message everyone else gets. I drew a circle around what I belive to be a Major's insignia. Now I dont know much abut the Army's dress uniform but I dont know what other shiny gold thing would be placed there. Theres also more to the picture but since its compressed its some weird file type that nothing on my computer can open so I just took a screen shot and cropped out everything else. If the rest of the picture was here you would see that he is saluting a Air Force Airman Basic.

In truth, I think that thing on his shoulder is a unit crest, it seems to match the crest on his beret, Jimmy, but who knows what half the crap means on an Army Uniform, Army uniforms always looked like a road map of NJ to me, it could also be his license to sell Ice Cream in the Army for all I know, but as there are many civilians in the area, I would think some sort of a graduation of some sort. Perhaps, the Airman you are talking of that I have never seen is his son, and he is just showing appreciation for what he has done in his only way that he knows how!

Regarding the image posted by miguelto.... I do believe that is a platoon in boot camp (looks like Parris Island to me) practicing for graduation. Our platoon guide did exactly the same thing (cammies green barracks cover) and wouldn't ya know I'm a PI grad. also

Carey got it right, it's a unit crest on the epaulets. By reading his ribbons it shows that he is reserve, (may have been active before). No signs of combat duty.

What we are really missing here is the top button of his blouse!

He brings shame to the uniform, himself and the U.S. Army! Does he think he is wearing a sport coat?

About the top button on the Army Uniform, who knows what the Army is doing with their uniforms now days. Hell! They are as squared away as a soup Sandwich anyway!
