TWO marines accused of smuggling an estimated $1.1 million worth of drugs into Australia aboard a US Navy ship have had their cases adjourned until next month.

Daniel Christopher Maio, 36, and Andrew Lester Labanon, 39, appeared briefly before Townsville Magistrates Court today accused of trying to import 11kg of amphetamines into Townsville aboard the USS Boxer.
Police arrested Maio and Canadian citizen Mehdi Mohammadi, 34, at a service station south of Townsville last month with the drugs allegedly concealed as gift-wrapped packages.

Labanon was allegedly found in a Townsville hotel with $US10,000 ($13,485) in cash.

Maio will reappear in court on August 22 for mention while Labanon will reappear on the same day for a committal hearing.

Both have been remanded in custody.

The USS Boxer was one of three American naval vessels to arrive in the north Queensland city for a joint military exercise with Australian troops.
