An Independence Day Thank You To The American Soldier
Sher Zieve
July 4, 2005

Thank you hardly seems enough. It never has been or ever will be enough. But, it is all that I have to offer to you men and women who willingly place yourselves out of country and in harm's way so that the rest of us can move about in safety at home. You who volunteer to protect the USA, your family, friends and those you've never met with your lives, are a breed apart from the rest of us. You always have been so.

From the days prior to the founding of our country, you fought as citizen-soldiers to build something great and unique for your children and your children's children. You knew then as you do now that a country founded on divine inspiration, which provides its citizens with the ability to pursue their own individual paths, is the only one worthy of having. Without needing to explain it to anyone, you understand the sacrifices that must be made to keep liberty intact; a reality too many seem to have forgotten or have never truly understood. Inherently, you are the ones who comprehend that freedom has never been free and that it is only a half-formed dream in the hearts and minds of men and women until they are willing to fight for it. Too many of our own citizens argue incessantly and incorrectly that fighting for anything is foolish. You know that is false and that these are the ones who have never had to fight. You realize instinctively that without the willingness to stand up to tyrannies, the truth of human independence and self-determination is impossible. You are the ones on the front lines, who are willingly giving yourselves into the battles and the wars, where that truth is certainty. Please know that the majority of us recognize the waging of war is sometimes necessary. We honor you and the sacrifices you make each and every day.

On this Independence Day and for all the other days to come, thank you. You are the true heroes of our time. You are our children, spouses and parents. You are the ones who confront and stop despotism and oppression in other countries, in order to keep them away from home. Most of all, know that we support you and love you. You are and have always been members of our families. My God bless you and keep each and every one of you safe, today and always.
