NEW RIVER -- Two years ago, Gunnery Sgt. Jody Law was called upon to deliver a eulogy for Staff Sgt. William B. Nelson, a Marine Corps aviation mechanic killed when a MV-22 Osprey crashed during a training flight in Arizona. He described Nelson, 30, as a friend, mentor and teacher.

Now Law is a mechanic working on instructional system design for the Osprey, throwing himself into the program in the only way he knows how.

Law spearheaded a move to dedicate a lounge at the New River Air Station Noncommissioned Officers' club in Nelson's name on Aug. 25, 2000, but now his goal is to make a safer aircraft, one mechanic at a time.
