June 23, 2005

Sgt. John Ethan Place, a former team leader with the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, will receive the Silver Star tomorrow at Camp Pendleton for his actions last year in and around Fallujah, Iraq.

The Silver Star is the third-highest military award designated solely for heroism in combat.

The citation recognizes Place, 22, for his combat actions in March and April 2004.

On April 26, the citation reads, "An enemy force attacked a company patrol 400 meters away from friendly lines. . . . Place disregarded his own safety and left the cover of his defensive position to close with and destroy the enemy."

Place, of St. Louis, joined the Marine Corps in October 2001. His honors include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.

Place is now assigned to 1st Marine Division Schools as a marksmanship instructor.
