Listen up, cruiser-destroyer sailors: Your days of doing work-ups separate from amphibs are numbered. Navy and Marine Corps officials are working on a plan to link amphibious ships with surface warships during training and deployment phases, fundamentally shifting the decades-old differences between carrier battle groups and amphibious ready groups.
Called the Expeditionary Strike Force, elements of the ARG and battle group will deploy together, creating a force that can insert Marines into hostile territory by air and sea while the warships strike targets far inland and in the air.
