CHERRY POINT -- Marine Corps reservists kicked off this year's Toys for Tots campaign Wednesday, with Maj.Gen. Robert M. Flanagan's donation of the first toy.

"Now, more than ever, the Toys for Tots program is in need of public support," said Gunnery Sgt. Neil Hicks, of the Reserve Support Unit. "The goal this year is 32,000 toys. The number just keeps growing."

Last year, Marines and volunteers collected and distributed over 13.2 million toys to 6.1 million needy children in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

Local reservists distribute toys in a 14-county area of eastern North Carolina -- from Cherry Point to the Virginia line. Hicks said there is a specific need for toys for children from birth to 2 years of age, and children between 11 and 14 years old.
