This really burns me in a lot of ways... recruiting is, and always will be a little bit dirty... it's how it works, no applicant is perfect, and there are quotas to meet. This sounds to me like this Marine is being crucified for what many recruiters do as a matter of routine.

Perhaps some former recruiters here could weigh in on this?

Wow, this is interesting.
If I am correct, Gunnery Sgt. David "Ryan" Cope is being defended by a civilian lawyer named Daniel Koleos, who, if this is the same Danial Koleos that I have met and briefly spent some time with, is a former Marine JAG. He was portayed in the movie "A few Good Men" by actor Kevin Bacon. This could be interesting.
