West Virginia to Officially Thank Vietnam Vets

The state is planning a "Welcome Home" party Saturday in Charleston.

West Virginia is throwing a "Welcome Home" party this Saturday for the state's Vietnam veterans.

State Veterans Affairs Director Larry Lynch said the event was created earlier this year when the state was contacted about what it planned to do to remember the 30th anniversary of the war's end.

Lynch served in the Marines in Vietnam and said the event is something that should have been done a long time ago.

There were 36,577 West Virginians who served in the war. The state had the highest per-capita fatality rate of all states, with 1,188 residents killed. That translated to about 84 killed for every 100,000 residents. The national average was nearly 59 per 100,000.

Saturday's event will feature a recital of the names of those killed in addition to a parade, a car show and other activities.
