A Camp Pendleton general has been named to lead the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, a 45,000-person group headquartered on base that constitutes a third of the Marines' operating forces.

Maj. Gen. James T. Conway currently is deputy commander of the U.S. Marine Forces Central Command at Camp Pendleton. Earlier, he was commanding general of Pendleton's 1st Marine Division, a 20,000-person infantry force.

He also has been nominated for promotion to lieutenant general.

Conway couldn't be reached for comment yesterday.
