PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. - The anti-terrorist war in Afghanistan affirmed the concept of using ships as "sea bases" and the next step may be a more permanent version, the commandant of the Marine Corps said Tuesday.
Operation Enduring Freedom showed the Marines and Navy could project ground power more than 400 miles inland by using aircraft to ferry troops and equipment from ships, Gen. James L. Jones said at the annual Expeditionary Warfare Conference.
Jones told military and defense industry officials that using floating bases similar to offshore drilling platforms is being considered for the future.
