He Went Down With the Arizona

By Sgt. William Poff, MCB Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay, Oahu

While serving with the USS Arizona's Marine detachments in the 1930s, according to author Paul Stillwell's book Battleship Arizona, the feisty 2nd Lt. Victor "Brute" Krulak , father of the current Marine Corps commandant, discovered he didn't always see eye-to-eye with the detachment's commanding officer, Capt. Theodore H. Cartwright.

The detachment's gunnery sergeant was Walter Holzworth, whom Krulak greatly respected. Holzworth was willing to give him advice when he asked for it, so the lieutenant said, "Gunny, I want to make a success of this profession. Tell me how to get along with the captain."

Holzworth said, "It's real easy, lieutenant. Just find out what the old son of a b----- wants and give it to him."

Years later, Krulak remembered, "I've never forgotten that advice. And you'll find Holzworth's name on that white tablet out there at Pearl Harbor. He went down with the Arizona."
