I was wondering if there is any way of finding out specific record of where he fought, where he completed boot camp, or what mos he was?
all I know is that he enlisted in chicago fought with the 3rd batt.

Wasn't there a big fire in, I believe , St. Louis back in the late 60'-early 70's that destroyed alot of military personnel records?
Awhile back my brother tried to find out about our Father; you know things like what did he do while in the service of his country etc., etc. His records were destroyed in the fire. SOL for us...big time. I wish you better luck, wannabemarine10.

:marine: From the "hotcock" I heard over the years...no USMC records were destroyed in the St.Louis Depository fire way back, just US ARMY records...use the DD214 separation paper to request your relatives Service Record Book from St. Louis...the SRB has everything your Marine relative did during his enlistment[s].. it reads like a definitive biography...Everything!!...check out those above links provided you...it took me 3 months to obtain my SRB in 1992....Good Luck....Semper Fi:marine:

Lock-n-load,
I do not know too much of the efficency of the Records Depot (St Louis); all I know is that I sent away for my records, and it has been over a year and a qurter looking in the rearview mirror. The last thing I heard from them was: "We have received your request, and we are acting upon it!" that was one year ago. Hell! I have faith in our Government Bureaucrates. It is the degree of faith that worries me about this country.
I found better luck writting to the Marine Corps Historical Center (1254 Charles Morris Street, SE, Bldg 58 WNY (HDH-2), Washington, DC 20374. Within days of the writing, I received 3/7's history in Vietnam, a book of the year I was there, which included different Operations my unit had been involved in; Records of wound (Time and Dates and descriptions of the wounds, and where they were received) as well. I also received a wealth of information on where to get other information processed, and I received a promise that they would send me a Two CD-ROM disks package of my Kilo Company Records in Vietnam for the time I was there.
Unit Dairies can be obtained at Records Service Section, Code MMSB-10 "Unit Diaries", Headquarters, US Marine Corps, 2008 Elliot Road, Suite 202, Quantico, VA 22134-0580.
If the original writer can find the DD214 of his Grand Father, it might be detter to include a copy with a written request, or a copy of his Discharge Certificate should do well, for Identification purposes.
Semper Fi, Bro!
