'Perfect Pete': A Marine First?

OK. Everybody all at once: "It's about time!" Time, that is, for a Marine general to be chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Breaking the Navy, Army, and Air Force stranglehold on the post, the Marine Corps almost certainly will take the top slot, since the two leading candidates--Gen. Peter Pace and Gen. James Jones --are Marine four-stars. And it seems that Pace, the JCS vice chairman, has the lead over Jones, our Europe supreme allied commander, to replace Gen. Richard Myers . Insiders note that it's been Pace, 59, who has recently filled in for Myers as Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld 's military twin during press conferences. And he's also been a star on TV. In fact, he's so telegenic that his nickname is "Perfect Pete." Fans say he's right out of central casting, a handsome Vietnam rifleman who did a stint as a White House social aide. Though critics say he avoids controversy, Pace's fans say he's the best person to sell the war. And the thousands of marines looking at more tours in Iraq say it's the perfect time to put one of their own in the top job.
