During my time active, I was in the 0300 field or infantry.
I than took a welding apprenticeship, on completing the apprenticeship.
I worked for twenty eight more year as a weldor.
My belief is, you should try to learn or better your skills in TIG and MIG welding.
The needs of the Corps will be in those areas.
Welding on helicopters or aircraft might require your skill in TIG welding.
The tanks and mobile artillery might need your skills in MIG welding dued to the specially alloys used in manufactering.
I believe welding might come under the "Motor Pool".
Maybe, someone with those MOS's might offer you more information.

Well like my brother Ricardo has said I cant really answer your question but I certainly can offer you my opinion. I spent six of the most wonderfull years of my life serving the United States Marine Corps and I have no regrets. I did so as a Motor Transport Operator MOS 3531 early on until I was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant of Marines and then was reassigned the MOS 3537 Motor transport Operations Chief/Truckmaster. I served during the Vietnmam War and as far as I was concerned the rank was good to me as on average I was promoted annually to E-6 in six years. It isnt necessarily the MOS that gets you promoted there is such a thing as a Meritorious Promotion to all ranks and you achieve that by being squared away and perhaps going above and beyond what is required by you current rank.
And yes my want to be brother Ricardo is correct in assuming that welders are needed in the Motor Pool.
Good luck in your quest to earn the title of Marine and become my brother.

It takes all to make the team, many MOS's are in need.
Like a fellow Marine said on another message board;
"Not all want to claim being a plane captain" as that was the job he performed in Vietnam.
Jim, job was in the motor transport field, they had their own things to worry about, like booby-traps laid in the road.
Some after a sweep of the road, nothing was safe in Vietnam.
All of us had a job to do.

I should have said. not many wantabee's would claim to being a "plane captain".
Just like many wantabee's would claim to being an ordinary "grunt".
They all claim to being in those special fields, doing dangerous missions.

BHABIT, once I carried that MOS, it was one of many, went with Bravo Company 1st Recon on a little cruise during the "Missiles of October" in 1962.
I was in Bravo 3rd Recon pior to Vietnam in 1965, on arriving on Okinawa, the line companies noticed the shortage of NCO's.
That how I came to India 3/4.
My Recon Platoon Commander in Bravo 3rd Recon was 1st Lt. Frank S. Reasoner USMC MOH.
He along several of my friends were to die in Vietnam.
Lt. Reasoner was CO of Alpha 3rd Recon, when he died trying to save his radioman.
So I know how lucky I really am.
Thanks for reminding me.
Just a plain 0351/0369/ 8531/8654 now 0321, who has a lot of "RESPECT" for Recon because I know the danger involved.

What I was trying to say, wantabee's are stealing the valor of men, who were in Recon, Force Recon and even those in CAP units, mainly those in Force Recon.
Who did dangerous missions.
Just like my fellow Marine said, not many claim to being a "plane captain".

BHABIT, I just noticed that you're from Louisiana, my boat team commander was CPL George Woodcock, also from Louisiana.
Where?
I can't remember for the life of me.
