I've recently rented a copy of Full Metal Jacket, which everybody said it's the best depiction of the Marine Corps boot camp.
Recently I've rented a 3-DVD set called Making Marines (part of the Discovery Channel collection). Has anybody seen it before? If so, is it a pretty accurate depiction of training? One thing I liked about it is that it also shows female recruits in training.
A lot of the female recruits have really short hair and seem tomboyish. What really impressed me are the female drill instructors. They seem just as powerful and demanding as their male counterparts, yet they are as feminine and motherly as the male drill instructors are masculine and father-like. During an interview scene, a female drill instructor said something that really made me have a great deal of respect for them. She said, ""As far as toughness go, I'm very tough and very firm. I expect a lot out of a female Marine. I expect them to act like ladies with class. It'd good to know that the Corp does not tolerate "gender-confused" Marines, both male and female.
Just thought I'd add that since most all Marine Corp boot camp resources and documentations are based on the male recruits. It also shows recruits' reaction when they got recycled, and there is also one who was discharged (she later revealed that she was discharged because she had a going-away party and smoked weed the night before she left for boot camp. Her drug test came back positive). Lots of tears from the recruits when interviews.
Also, in the documentation, drill instructors are shown giving recruits chest blows not unlike those seen in the Jason Tharp/drowned recruit. After seeing that, I'd have to say that the media is blowing the incident way out of proportion.
Anybody else recommended any other video resources for poolees?
