Its usually about 4 or 5 minutes. It all depends.

The object of the excercise is to teach the seriousness of chemical warfare. They will keep you there until it is learned.

I tried spoofing it and did some deep hyperventilating before my turn to go in. I held my breath the whole time. Just when my group was exiting, the Drill Instructor noticed I wasn't all f*cked up.

So he drills me on a few General Orders and 20 pushs up for good measure!

I love CS. It really clears up the sinuses.

Question for the NBC NCO or someone familiar with the m40a1: How do you install the optical corrective inserts (plastic)? I've pored over the TM and run searches online, but I can't find instructions, and it doesn't look immediately obvious from the looks of the mask... anyone capable of giving a quick hip-pocket class?

We had to don and then doff or masks inside. There was no chance of holding your breath as we had to sing the Marine Hymn and very loudly. Nasty stuff that CS, burns every where you sweat.

Same here jinelson.

Standard drill---Put on mask and clear---remove mask and sing The Marine Corps Hymn---put on mask and clear---exit---remove mask too soon and be gased again.

In my second go around in the military I required corrective inserts (glasses). The instructions came with them.

I found it better to just breathe it in, its better then holding your breath then taking a big gasp of it. Plus you'll find it hard to hold your breath while your doing sidestrattle hops and monkey F**&ers!!!.. I hope your drill instructors make ya'll do push ups too, because when you come out of the chamber and you go to wipe your eyes or all the snot away from your nasty little faces, then you will really understand what they mean when they talk about discipline.

If you just do what they tell you to do, and trust your equipment. which is why your in there in the first place… you will do fine, when you come out they are not being pricks when they tell you to keep your little paws away from your grapes. Trust your Drill Instructors, Trust your gear, learn your orders, PT, Start sounding off NOW so when your dong there your lungs will and throat will be used to it, and you wont be one of those who loses there voices. The louder you are able to sound off the more you will motivate your Drill Instructors.

Well yellowwing, not sure who you are directing that to but as it relates to this post---I was getting CS gassed again at Camp Crowder, but you could not have known that.

They used to make us go thru using CN, (in the early sixties) which is the milder form of tear gas. We didn't think there was anything mild about it at the time. Occasionally they would make us go through with the CS, which was the riot control type. The REAL stuff.

However, you haven't really lived until you go through the OC (Oleoresin Capsicum) training. (More commonly known as pepper spray.) Way worse than either CN or CS.

What we learned quickly though, no matter which you are hit with, you will survive, even though you are convinced you are dying at the time it happens.

Been through all three many times, and surprisingly have survived every time.

(I DO, however, draw the line at the Taser. Have no desire to "take the ride" with that puppy. That is one nasty SOB.)http://pages.prodigy.net/rogerlori1/emoticons/shock7.gif

i was talking wit a local Marine fresh from bootcamp and he said he had to do it a few times because the D.I.'s said that they would do it until they come out and no ones messed up , apparently somebody kept collasping on the ground or sumthin, but needless to say he told me that he did it 3 or 4 times about 10 mins each

I found it better to just breathe it in, its better then holding your breath then taking a big gasp of it.

Meaning I should have done that in my summer of 83, instead of trying to outsmart the Drill Instructors.

"Outsmart the Drill Intructors", now that sounds really idiotic when I write it down.

Nightcrawler,
If you can hold your breath that long you should be a diver. Cajun guy is right... CN CS aint shizzle compared to OC. take a hit of that and you'll breeze right through the gas. course you'll still have to wipe the snot off the top of yer boots no matter what. lol
If your really into self abuse " take the ride" on the taser with the OC for a preship warm up. That will clear yer nostrils !!!

They used to line us up around the walls, in a row like dominoes. With one hand on the shoulded of the guy in front of you.

Then once the party started, they would tell us to take the masks off and one at a time sound off your service numbers, " NO ONE WILL LEAVE HERE TILL EVERY MAGGOT HAS GIVEN HIS CORRECT NUMBER "..!!!

They stood right there with a list of service # making sure you didn't just pull any old # out of the air..

If I remember correctly we had a few blanket parties that evey nite............Stemming from a few butt-heads who didn't remember their flippin #'s and everyone had to stand in that S*IT longer then we should have..........Semper-Fi

I personally found that if I took really short fast breaths through clenched teeth, that the CS wasn't nearly as bad. All things considered, CS gas is composed of fairly large particles, and breatheing through a clenched mouth can help filter it slightly.

Of course, I didn't really realise this until I was out in the fleet, but oh well.
