Choosing Sides: General Mattis vs. Professor Churchill

In yet another display of how out-of-touch with reality the American Left truly is, liberals have chosen to defend the soulless words of a University of Colorado professor over the comments on staunch reality from one of this country’s bravest and most experienced military leaders.

When assessing political issues like the one at hand, it’s important to observe which side of the isle the Left and Right fall on. I’ll expound on that in a moment.

On February 4, 2005, Marine Lieutenant General James Mattis spoke to colleagues at a panel regarding strategies for the war on terrorism in San Diego, California. One must realize that whenever a representative of the US military speaks, the Left anxiously awaits – salivating at the opportunity to denounce and criticize. Their opportunity arose when Lt. Gen. Mattis spoke of the following reality:

“Actually it’s quite fun to fight them, you know. It’s a hell of a hoot,” Mattis said, prompting laughter from some military members in the audience. “It’s fun to shoot some people. I’ll be right up there with you. I like brawling.

“You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for five years because they didn’t wear a veil,” Mattis said. “You know, guys like that ain’t got no manhood left anyway. So it’s a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them.”

A few states east, controversy surrounded University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill. Churchill has written an essay entitled “Some People Push Back: On the Justice of Roosting Chickens” which declares “As for those in the World Trade Center, well, really, let’s get a grip here, shall we? True enough, they were civilians of a sort. But innocent? Gimme a break.”

The essay goes on to describe the victims as “little Eichmanns,” referring to Adolph Eichmann, who executed Adolph Hitler’s plan to exterminate Jews during World War II.

The controversy made headlines when Churchill was scheduled to speak at Hamilton College in New York state on Thursday February 3, and family members of people who died in the 9/11 incidents protested his upcoming speech. Hamilton’s website later indicated that the panel, “Limits on Dissent”, has been cancelled due to “safety concerns,” even after the event had been moved to a larger building.(In all fairness, however, I must note that Churchill is scheduled to speak at the San Francisco Anarchist Bookfair on March 26, 2005. So you can be sure he’s just a misunderstood, well-rounded, God-fearing, flag-waiving, patriotic American.)

While University officials have said they are gathering all of Churchill’s writings, interviews and statements to determine whether he has violated his terms of employment, liberals aren’t saying anything. Talk to your local liberal, you’ll see.

This kind of speech doesn’t bother the American Left. They defend Churchill’s ‘‘right’’ to this blatant and morally void hate speech, but not Lt. Gen. Mattis’ right to use the term ‘‘fun’’ when describing the sensation he feels when carrying out his duty. They scream about First Amendment rights, but only if it applies to those who espouse liberal ideology.

On Fox News’ debate show Hannity and Colmes, the resident leftist Alan Colmes referred to Lt. Gen. Mattis’ comments as “indefensible.” I beg to differ, Alan. I will defend him and you should too. Keep in mind that the Lt. Gen. was not talking about civilians. He was not talking about prisoners of war. He was talking about an enemy that has engaged our military service members. Not to mention the fact that Colmes’ right to even question such authority is provided by men like Lt. Gen. Mattis.

On the same show, liberal author and pundit Bill Press called for the firing of Lt. Gen. Mattis. Three days later he referred to Lt. Gen. Mattis as a “dumb-ass indeed” on his website. Firing? Dumb-ass? Thank you Mr. Press, for illustrating the definition of asinine.

Liberals are up in arms about the potential firing of Professor Churchill and are licking their chops in anticipation of a law suit against the University of Colorado, yet have the gall to lambaste a Marine Corps officer, denounce the Bush administration for not condemning his words and call for his firing.

When dealing with liberals, it’s advantageous to remember that they are unable to conceive the mindset involved in defending a nation. This will help you maintain a lower blood pressure. Liberals demand to know what goes on in war, but run screaming when they get truthful answers.

Some military service members do find joy in killing evil. I have met some of them personally. No one ever said war was pretty. But the fact that killing evil terrorists brings some sense of joy to some who have been trained for that precise mission should never be discredited. Like any business, this is not for all. But for those who have accepted the call to serve in the US armed forces, it is a reality. The United States government trains the military to defend the constitution at any cost. In order to do so, some of us must inflict death when the situation arises.

Syndicated columnist and best selling author David Limbaugh put it well when he wrote:

“I frankly can’t imagine getting enjoyment out of killing another human being, but I certainly have no problem with those who do -- at least those who are assigned that duty under color of law -- as is the case with our military in Iraq.”

Lt. Gen. Mattis, an infantryman and 30-year student of the art of war, loves his job. He loves defending freedom and putting his life on the line for the betterment of our nation. You see, when people love their job and do it to the best of their abilities, liberals cringe. Loving one’s job – especially the demanding occupation of protecting our nation at any cost – goes against the quasi-socialistic, anti-military mindset of the American Left. So entrenched are they in socialist ideals, the thought of Americans loving what they do at work is mind-boggling.

In order to keep any liberals reading this from going into a tizzy, I’d like to propose a hypothetical. Let’s say that both instances of speech were wrong. I’m on the record as believing Churchill’s words are disgusting and vile and Lt. Gen. Mattis’ are not, but let’s say for the sake of argument that they are both wrong.

Notice which side the American Left falls on. Notice which side the American Right falls on. Liberals are all too anxious to side with an anti-American professor who exploits the death of Americans. Conservatives are all too anxious to side with a military leader described by Marine Corps Commandant General Hagee as “one of this country’s bravest and most experienced military leaders.”

If both liberals and conservatives were wrong on this issue for supporting either man’s words, conservatives have obviously sided with the lesser of the two evils. This is a very telling illustration if I do write so myself. If you are reading this and consider yourself an American politics fence-sitter, these situations should prove very indicative of each side’s innate differences.

Not only does the American Left want to de-fund the military as we’ve seen time and time again, they would love to render us impotent in the process. That men like Lt. Gen. Mattis are leading troops into harm’s way is not a disgrace to our great military, it is a staple. As the New York Times reported, Lt. Gen. Mattis is revered by his troops. He speaks our language, declares often unpopular reality and is unafraid. That is what makes our military the greatest – men like Lt. Gen. Mattis talk the talk and fight the fight.

As Americans we all have the right to choose which of these two men’s words to defend. Just keep in mind that one of these men will defend to the death your right to do so.

To quote the former Commander of the Army War College, retired Major Robert Scales:

“We must celebrate the fact that we have men like Jim Mattis willing to devote (and give) their lives when necessary to commit an act that most of those in our society would be horrified to even contemplate. If you are offended by these emotions, then seriously consider joining an Army or Marine infantry unit so that you can demonstrate how to kill an enemy in a more humane and politically correct manner.”

Just a quick comparison as to how FUBAR things are at the university. The football coach was suspended for 5 months for making comments about a female player that were " unkind towards women" but this A-HOLE churchill is still teaching classes and a dept. head when he's proven a fraud, ahhh the luxury of being a liberal at todays universities. I think they should let him speak......in an open field with good fields of fire for all of us "little eichmans" !!!
