By RUSSELL RIAN / The Dallas Morning News

Irving High School students, friends and community members are mourning the loss of a second former graduate Marine killed in Iraq.

Lance Cpl. Nazario Serrano, 20, of Irving, died Sunday as millions of Iraqis went to the polls. The 2003 Irving High graduate died a result of hostile action in Al Anbar Province, Iraq, a Defense Dept. statement said. Details of the incident weren’t immediately available.

Nazario Serrano Spc. Josiah Vandertulip, a 2002 graduate from the school, was killed Oct. 14 when his patrol came under enemy small-arms fire in Baghdad.

“They’re shocked it’s the second one we’ve had,” said teacher Danielle Keith, who had him in her marketing class club. “It really has affected them – sparked discussions about Bush getting our troops back.”

Principal Carolyn Dowler said they had not announced the Marine’s death to the school at the request of the family, who have two other siblings attending the school, but will likely have a memorial service eventually.

“We haven’t made our plans yet, it’s likely we’ll follow through with the same type of service” as was held with Spc. Vandertulip. A Veterans Day memorial service for Spc. Vandertulip attracted a couple thousand students, educators and community leaders. A memorial plaque hangs permanently in the school’s library and a scholarship has since been created in his honor.

Those who knew Cpl. Serrano described him as a jovial man who always had a smile to offer those he met.

“He was awesome. He was bubbly and very energetic,” said Ms. Keith. “He was very down to earth and got along with everybody ... someone who should still be around.”

As a student, he worked for several years at Supercuts near the Irving Mall, where he greeted customers, swept the floors and handled the phones.

“He was really polite and really professional, said Shundra Eanes, who worked as a stylist at the salon and is now manager.

He enjoyed Route 44s, a blue slushie-type drink from Sonic, his motorcycle and cars, friends said.

“He was really into cars and scooping them up. The louder they were the better,” Ms. Eanes said.

Cpl. Serrano was assigned to the Combat Service Support Battalion 1, Combat Service Support Group 11, 1st Force Service Support Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Cpl. Serrano had come into the shop in the last couple of months for a haircut and seemed to amenable to his decision, she said.

“He said it was really hot, way past the hot we know here,” she said. “He didn’t sound afraid. He seemed at peace with his decision.”

My Deepest Sympathy and Condolences for the Family and Friends....

Rest in Peace

When we have done all the work we were sent to Earth to do, We are allowed to shed our body, which imprisons our soul like a cocoon encloses the future butterfly;
And when the time is right, we can let go of it and we will be free of pain, free of fears and worries, free as a very beautiful butterfly returning home to God.

God Bless

Ellie

It is THIS Marine, and Marines like Sgt. Norwood (from the SoU address last night),
and every other Marine,
Soldier,
Guardsman,
Airman,
Sailor,
Contractor,
et al....

that made it possible for the people of Iraq to

give the terrorist world the FINGER

Rest in Peace my Brothers, and Sisters. Rest in the Knowledge that your sacrifice has not been in vain. Rest in the Lord Almightys Peace, that your family and loved ones are secure in their beds at night.

Rest... and Thank You, one and all.

Amen
