View Full Version : Why do Drill Instructors all act like Bu**Heads
I feel this is a thread most poolee's will get a little out of. Marines join in with your thoughts and experiences with Drill Instructors. Heres some of mine.
Any of you Marine ever think back to some of those ridiculous ( OR so we thought at the time ) things that Drill Instructors not only had us do.........But some of the little things that would set them OFF...??
At the time........i'd secretly just shake my head, I couldn't figure out why was this such a big deal to these people...?
But later I found out that was only the civilian in me spouting off.
Drill Instructors need to simulate war time, perhap even a POW type environment. What better way to do this, then act, or play the part of an enemy...!!!
After the military I'd sometimes wonder how many Drill Instructors would have rather put a hand on the shoulder of a recruit. And calmly explained something. But for those of us who have learned the true meaning of " tough Love " we now Know had a Drill Instructors took approch back then............A pat on the back, or gee recruit could you please try harder next time...........Where would that recruit be when the going get tough. Or maybe if he'd buckles under fire when other members of a fire team, or platoon needed him to do his job.
All of us who have or are wearing the eagle, globe, and anchor we know with out a doubt, we've all been baptised by tough love Marine Corps. Style..........I wish I had a way to shank the hands of my recruiters who kept me alive when things got tough...Semper-Fi

I'm no Marine, but I know why they act tough.
In my opinion these men (and women) became Drill Instructors for a reason. As Joker put it in Full Metal Jacket, "The Marine Corps wants to build indestructable men....men without fear." These Marines willingly take the task of transforming civilians into US Marines, so as stated by Cpl. Jo1753, they use the tough love approach. I for one believe it's the only way to do it.

I was talking with this guy about almost the same thing. He said his 3rd hat kept saying at night when he had duty, "Do you really think I want 70 recruits screaming at me? I know you understand just softly say, aye sir. and take care of business."

A DI is what keeps this corps going(we are not a mommy's corps)-Mothers of america try to ask for DI's to be softer. Ma'am if I was to be nicer to your son then I guess you don't want him to come home after a mission, cause the gooks don't care about what you think. We take pride in watching those men and females walk off the black top knowing we trained them well- what descisions they make from ther is up to the integrity of themself's.
Go to a boot camp and watch what they do(for those that haven't been there) I have had some of my best get hurt and can't finish

Also, I might add, I think Drill Instructors want to put this thought in the heads of the recruits.
"This ain't the real thing, but if I can't take those 3 jerks criticizing everything I do, then I won't be able to take the ragheads shooting at me."
Being hard on the recruits is the only way to prepare them for what's waiting in Iraq.

The biggest lesson, of why Drill Instructors are Bu**Heads, come on the battlefield.
On a round cracking by my ear, it brought the instantous re-action of returning fire from the direction that round came from.
As I was going down, I was screaming mentally to myself;
"You should have kick harder!" but in reality, what they taught me help keep alive for 17 months in Vietnam.
The greatest testimony to what a great job, these men and women do.

Ahhh, political incorrectness, one of the many reasons I love the Corps.
There were times in boot camp when I really had a death wish toward one or more of my drill instructors. But I'm sure the combat situation is a lot worse. I only have gratitude toward my drill instructors, they remade me into who I am now.
I only wish I was in Iraq right now, gettin' some with my band of brothers.

cmon Marines this isnt hard to figure out...We come from all walks of life. Break everyone down to nothing and build them up to a young fine disciplined fighting machine.....one color green and somedays we turn to blue and somedays we look like a desert......and I will quit there

Gunny.........it wasn't a question whether or not it was hard to figure out. The thread read " Why do Drill Instructors all act like Bu**Heads.......Everyone probably has a somewhat different story, stemming from their boot camp experience. I know my story wouldn't exactly match yours or perhaps a thousand other Marines. And I'd say yours would differ in the same way..Semper-Fi

The harshest treatment my Drill Instructor's ever gave me was when I failed to lock my rifle up, (a mortal sin!). Afterwards I NEVER forgot again!

I was standing gear gaurd on easter sunday, and I was in the squadbay all alone, and I started wistling to myself, and my Senior walked in and I didn't see him. Man, he tore me a new one, and any tiime we were not activley training, he made me "seranade" the platoon with my whistling LOL
