WHAT WILL:

The Story:

Wounded TEXICAN MARINE during the inaugural speech by President Bush

Cpl Casey Owens, 22, of Houston, Texas was critically wounded September 20, 2004, in Iraq while on his second tour of duty. Casey has sustained numerous injuries including over 200 shrapnel wounds, broken jaw, broken collar bone, amputation of right leg above the knee and amputation of the left leg below the knee.

Cpl Owens mother, Janna Dunkel of SugarLand and his sister, Lezleigh Kleibrink of Dallas, TX traveled to Germany to be with Casey at Landstuhl AFB. LCpl Owens was flown to the US on Monday, September 27 to Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland with his mother and sister. Casey has since had several operations, and as of the week of October 11th has had leg drains, chest tubes and his tracheostomy removed. He was able on Tuesday, October 12 to get into a wheelchair for the first time to receive services that he previously has not been able to. It was a wonderful moment where he gained mobility and his life back! Casey has been transfered to Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where he will begin the very long process of rehabilitation and gaining two prosthetic legs at their world-renown amputee center.

Casey received his promotion from LCpl to Cpl on October 1 in the ICU of the National Naval Medical Center, and received his Purple Heart at WRAMC from the Commandant of the Marine Corps on October 23.

Recovery is expected to be 12-18 months. A fund has been established to help the family offset the lack of income and expenses involved in supporting Casey.
