Jacksonville is a great military community which respects the sacrifices of the men and women serving in the armed forces. It is fitting that Jacksonville salute these brave individuals, and is a reminder that as we gather to celebrate the Super Bowl many American patriots will be engaged in the defense of our liberty.

The Honorable Mayor John Peyton of Jacksonville Announces Key to the City Ceremony to Honor Three Injured War on Terror Military Heroes

Marine Corporal James Eddie Wright, Army Specialist Danielle Green and Navy Corpsman Jose Ramos will be honored in Jacksonville on Thursday February 3rd at 11:30 at the Veterans Wall near Alltel Stadium. They will receive the keys to the city from the Honorable John Peyton - Mayor of Jacksonville. The theme of the day is perspective. (Mayor Quote on perspective? goes here)

The ceremony is the result of a joint effort with Impact Player Partners, a program where athletes, entertainers & community leaders work together to improve the quality of life of America's heroes wounded in the war on terror.

Marine Corporal James Eddie Wright fought for 35 minutes after sustaining his unthinkable injuries. Declared clinically dead three times he received 38 pints of blood.

'When I saw the stumps, I thought, `Damn, both of them?' Then I looked at my leg and I was trying to figure how to put a tourniquet on it because I didn't have any hands.''
Marine Corporal James "Eddie" Wright

Danielle Green had her left hand blown off on top of an Iraqi police station - it was the hand she dribbled the basketball with at Notre Dame. It's also the hand where she wore her wedding ring. You talk about team chemistry - her unit went back and retrieved her wedding ring off of her severed hand - found under six inches of rubble.

Jose Ramos was a medic helping the Marines in the field when he was hit. Serving others is how this man is wired. He recently completed the New York marathon after losing his arm only four months earlier. He's running the marathon again next year - this time raising money for less fortunate military families.

"Perspective is an important tenet in America today - especially during Super Bowl week," said Dick Lynch & Christian Okoye (former All-Pro with the Kansas City Chiefs), co-founders of the organization. "With this ceremony, the leadership of Jacksonville will show all Americans, especially our military heroes serving abroad, that while they are getting shot at and face death everyday they are front and center on the minds of everyone - especially during Super Bowl week.

If you read my other post on Jacksoville and superbowl you see it is a question at this point if we shall have access to our own. NFL has already said NO to any local veteran participation as they are bringing in "...thousands of Veterans from all over the country". We're pleased to have the influx of people and activity; we're just less than happy about the shortfux of being denied to our own.

Maybe next war our Commander in Chief can send over the NFL instead of our servicemen. The lowest paid in the NFL probably make a lot more money than our warriors anyway. They even have their own embedded journalists already.

I do not hate the NFL; I am less than happy about the true nature of their business. I NEVER met a Marine anywhere that liked and wanted the short end of any deal.
