cook deer meat? I was given a small deer steak and haven't a clue as how to prepare or cook it. Ellie suggested that I soak it overnight using Italian dressing. I'm sure there are lots of deer hunters here so I'm up for any suggestions.

Thanks

You can cure it with vinegar and water ( takes the wild taste out) Depending on how big it is you can make BBQ, bake it or grill it.
All depends on what cut you have. i.e. hind quarter, shoulder, tenderloin? My uncle likes to grind it up and make sausage or uses it in spagetti sauce.

Soak overnight in Coke - not only will that take out the gamey taste, it works as a tenderizer.

Also you can soak in milk over night.I've heard that takes the wild taste out of any wild game.

Alot of it depends upon your likes, and how it was processed originally. I personally think the 'gamey' taste is part of its appeal. It's NOT SUPPOSED to taste like beef, or pork, or monkey, or... lol

If you have several steaks, thaw (probably frozen) 1 and experiment. I prefer beef MedRare... but tend to go a little more MedWell with venison.

Not much fat, so it will cook DRIER, faster, be careful with it. Try the grill for a steak, sliced thin and broiled for 'steak' and biscuits, ground up in chili... experiment !!

Now, I'm afraid to even try it!! LOL
Don't think I've ever eaten deer meat, think I'll soak it
in coke as marinemom suggested, maybe put 2 cokes ---'cause I
loves COKE . Don't have a dog to give it to, so guess I'll
try it this one time and let everybody know how it came out.

I had some deer meat , in strips, prepared in a corn type of porridgewith seasoning. It was a Nicaraguan way of preparing this deer dish. Quite tasty even though it looked yucky.

Well, NC gal, you pobably shouldn't listen to me, I am just not much on game food. hell, I am not much on fresh food period! LMAO. Seriously, I'd rather have a can of Ravioli, or a hot dog from Quik Trip, than just about anything else. ( first, school food, then Marine chow and MRE's, then being poor and single, have ruined my taste buds for what most people would call good food LOL)

Ellie's idea is great, the vineger in the italian dressing would do the trick. My sister just loads it up with a ton of garlic.

On a two pound venison roast she made incisions and stuffed in about 8 garlic clove sections. Then powder it with salt, pepper, paprika, bit o cayenne.

Good lean meat! No hormones, steroids, or exotic antibiotics.

Here’s a great recipe that is a no-brainer and taste’ great. When I was single with 2 boys to raise we ate this all year long with cornbread (what they liked to make).

In a crock-pot put a Deer roast (salt and pepper first), an apple quartered, a potato for everyone, a hand full of carrots, a couple sticks of celery chopped, and a can of crème of mushroom soup on top. And finally on top of that add 2 heaping tablespoons of horseradish!

Cook all day on slow; I used to make mine at night and start in the AM when I went to work at 6 AM. Cook on slow it’ll be tender and taste great; don’t be afraid of the horseradish!

Good luck

After Cook's posting, think I have lost my appetite, poor dove.
I once ate calf testicle, so if I ate this thing, guess deer meat won't be so bad. My hubby and I visited his 'Nam friend in South Dakota 1980 something, they live on a farm. We stayed five days. They cooked these calves you know whats, and didn't tell us what the meat was that we were eating. But, it was rather good, tasted something like pork chops. One day for dinner, his wife cooked pheasant, which I had never eaten before and this was really good. They said that only the breast is only what you can really eat from the pheasant. The dark meat is too tough to eat.

Cook, love little Madison, she 's a little sweetheart.

Yeah, I've heard of mountain oysters before, never tasted me none though. I'll leave that to others less fortunate than I. Besides, wouldn't want anyone eatin' my oysters anyhow.

marinade in a butter/garlic sauce (to taste) overnight. Place in crock pot for 4-6 hours on medium or place in oven at 300 for 3 hours (both with 1/2 inch of water or remainded of marinade and veggies)

Don't believe me..... I'll set up a rib or chick evening at my place during the reunion...

take care and enjoy

Mike
