New Years Daze

Now that the Winter Solstice and other Pagan celebrations have concluded, it’s time to shake off the effects of our annual Bacchanalian rituals and take stock of recent events with a clear head. I offer, in no particular order, a few of the most interesting.

Amber Frey made news early, cashing in on her notoriety with her memoirs due out this week. Ms. Frey became a hero for taping her private phone conversations, leading to the prosecution of an immoral and possibly felonious man. This reward, of course, is reserved only for women who bring down men not worshipped and protected by the mainstream media.

Mock shock emitted from both coasts when heavy metal schlocker Vince Neil wished his bandmate a ‘happy new year’ in the normal rock vernacular on the Tonight Show. His salutation was widely reported as a dropping of the ‘f-bomb’, though in what passes for the arts and entertainment world of 2005, it is no more than a water balloon. Maybe this is what John Kerry meant when he said that Hollywood represented the heart of America.

Sometime early in its 109 th session, Congress will hear debate on Social Security reform. While overhauling this dinosaur of FDR’s failed welfare state, there will be great caterwauling from the left as Americans stand to partially reclaim their right to plan for their own future. Although the notion that citizens, and not government know best is universally repugnant to them, liberals will resist mostly because the proposed reforms are voluntary, like school vouchers and faith-based initiatives. When it comes to giving Americans the right to choose, the only choice they vigorously support is that which enables the murder of unborn children.

Last year ended with a powerful reminder that nature, in a matter of minutes, can wreak havoc as well or more cruelly than Man at his determined best. The inevitable liberal hand-wringing though is, naturally, directed at those (Americans) who would help ease the suffering of countless afflicted souls; much like the waves of abuse heaped on the liberators of fifty million Afghanis and Iraqis except that now, God joins the Great Satan on the blame list.

The strangest upshot from the tsunami was the appointment by President Bush of his two predecessors to head up a group to promote private donations to the relief effort. How gallant that the president is willing to share the big tent of American largesse with the Democrats’ best fundraiser. His Hollywood connections aside, Bill Clinton is eminently qualified to raise money from, er, for Indonesians.

In the news also comes word that several top Democrats are urging Terry McAuliffe to remain at the helm of the DNC Titanic for at least another year. This is the best Solstice gift Republicans might receive. But Terry, loser of the last four major elections, may opt to return to the private sector and rest on his laurels. An anonymous party flack actually said, "He has the opportunity now to exit as probably the most popular and highly regarded chair in modern history.”

Just days after celebrating Saturnalia with a few close friends, one of my favorite spectacles of every-other new year is watching new members of Congress take the oath of office. The best part is when liberals solemnly swear to “support and defend the living, breathing Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic and especially John Ashcroft.”

Speaking of the Attorney General, this week’s confirmation hearings on Alberto Gonzales’ nomination for that position are just another excuse for liberals to sing their favorite song: the Abu Ghraib blues. Liberal senators who would deny Judge Gonzales the post for treating harshly with savage terrorists, had no problem supporting Janet Reno who ordered the executions of American citizens in Waco without so much as a trial.

On a similar note, Democrats on the Hill posted challenges to the 2004 election results. They are determined that they will continue to press for voting reforms; at least until they recapture the White House and Congress. One wonders if the voting machines and practices they now so abhor were in place in 1992 and 1996. Their endless electoral keening proves once again that sour grapes do indeed produce sour whine.

Yes, the new year has gotten off to quite a bang and it’s barely a week old. If we continue at this rate, we’ll have plenty to keep us on the edge of our seats until the weather warms and it’s time to treat the kiddies to the Vernal Equinox egg hunt.
