Mrs. USA Makes Stop at Camp Lejeune

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Mrs. United States 2004, Edrienne L. Carpenter, 31, visited the Marine Corps Exchange for a meet-and-greet autograph session Dec. 8, on her tour around the country.
Carpenter travels around presenting her platform on Post Partum Depression to many different groups of people. She has one year of traveling until the next Mrs. USA is crowned.
Carpenter's father spent many years in the Navy giving her a strong tie and a genuine love and support for all who serve in the military. She wanted to come here and show her support for the Marines and sailors having not been to North Carolina on her previous tours.
"I have the deepest sympathies for those in the military and am thankful for all the sacrifices they make," Carpenter explained. "I grew up around many service members in Hawaii and have the utmost respect for them all."
A group of Japanese officers from the Japanese Army were visiting here and had a chance to meet and receive autographed pictures from Carpenter. Having learned some of the Japanese language at a younger age, Carpenter was able to speak to the officers.
Carpenter has been married for nine years to her husband, Shane, and they have two boys, Logan, 3, and Austin, 2. Carpenter faced a severe case of Post Partum Depression after having two children. During the time when she faced her toughest struggles, she was always sleeping and never got out of the house.
With the support of her husband, she overcame her struggles of depression, and was able to move on and become Mrs. USA a year later.
Appearing on television on the Dr. Phil Show, she explained to millions of viewers what her platform is and how she overcame the struggles in her life.
Until the tour ends in August 2005, Carpenter will send her message out about Post Partum Depression and how much it needs to be diagnosed and treated.
