Hello all,
I have a quick question I hope someone can answer. In many photos and videos I have seen on Marines and soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan I see this black block thing on the foreguard of the M-16A2 and M-4. I was wondering what that is. Is it a LAM or something?
Thanks in advance-

I think your looking at a laser pointing type device.

Yep that's a laser pointer. Must be nice to have all the high speed gear these days! Not that it helps very much in a combat zone. Keep it simple stupid! Just more junk to lug around on the battlefield that is basically useless when the rounds start flying!

If it doesn't do any good then why would people want it?
Technology son. It made somebody look important and costs alot of money. So don't count on it sometimes the old ways are best.
When do u report Patrick8605?

Timber, is it possible that it's a laser designator?

I doubt its a laser designator and in a combat zone it is use less in less they are doing house to house fighting and clearing rooms. which of course yall know they are.
LivinSoFree I would highly dought that it is a designator due to it's size. Also with that many running around. They are usually a little bigger and handheld. Plus they would only have one or two per platoon for stratigic strikes.

Roger that, thanks for the info.
Those pictures are of an M16A4 - not an M16A2

hmm.. I was always told that it was to "paint" a target like a tank or a bunker so the guys in the sky can take care of it..

I was theorizing it was for squad leaders to direct fire. "Grenadier, put a Willie-Pete in the window just to the left of my laser!"
As more of our combat Marines return, we'll know for sure.
