2 Marines on stamp set have links to Pendleton

Starting in May, the U.S. Postal Service will offer a first-class stamp set commemorating four famous Marines. At least two of the honorees have connections to Camp Pendleton.
The names of Lt. Gen. Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller, Lt. Gen. John A. Lejeune, Gunnery Sgt. John Basilone and Sgt. Daniel J. Daly are well-known to Marines.
Puller is a luminary in Corps history. He was awarded five Navy Crosses – which are second only to the Medal of Honor – during a career that included service in World War II and the Korean War. Puller led 1st Marine Division Marines in Korea. The division is headquartered at Pendleton.
Basilone, a Medal of Honor recipient, is remembered at Pendleton by a major road bearing his name. Basilone's heroism on Guadalcanal island during World War II earned him the coveted medal. He died in 1945 while charging a Japanese position on Iwo Jima. He was based at Pendleton.
Camp Lejeune in North Carolina is named after the general who started some of the Marine Corps' traditions, such as celebrating the Corps' birthday. He played a big part in orientating the service as an amphibious force capable of rapid deployment.
Daly, another Medal of Honor awardee, initially won fame for service in Haiti. He gained more renown for charging German forces in the World War I battle of Belleau Wood.
