SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) - President Bush stepped into the middle of a confrontation and pulled his lead Secret Service agent away from Chilean security officials who barred his bodyguards from entering an elegant dinner for 21 world leaders Saturday night.

Several Chilean and American agents got into a pushing and shoving match outside the cultural center where the dinner was held. The incident happened after Bush and his wife, Laura, had just posed for pictures on a red carpet with the host of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, Chilean President Ricardo Lagos and his wife, Luisa Duran.

As Bush stepped inside, Chilean agents closed ranks at the door, blocking the president's agents from following. Stopping for more pictures, Bush noticed the fracas and turned back. He reached through the dispute and pulled his agent from the scrum and into the building.

The president, looking irritated, straightened his shirt cuffs as he went into the dinner. The incident was shown on APEC television.

"Chilean security tried to stop the president's Secret Service from accompanying him," said White House deputy press secretary Claire Buchan. "He told them they were with him and the issue was resolved."

In just those brief moments of seperation, was all that is needed!

The president could have suffered great harm.

These Chilie security agents should have known, that you don't prevent our secret service agents from being at the president's side.

this realy upsets me...

Don't know if the Secret service agents are to blame for not clarifying this in the beginning or the what, but it should never have happened...

it could have all been a set up!

Too much to loose here......

An incounter with a central or south American agent/military becomes a "macho" thing at the get-go. Been there---Panama---it's an "in your face" from the start. Looks like the President jumped right in!

You are right SparrowHawk, the seperation was not a good thing and who was covering the First Lady at the time?

I would guess that things will get tightened up a few turns.

Something stinks about that incident. I'll be glad when he's back home.

Go to give it to the President, he had good situational awareness.

I could just see them Latin American bastards trying to set our President up for the kill. Wouldn't surprise me a bit. Good thing our Secret Service is so protetive over him. Hopefully his security detail will be doubled or even tripled after this incident. I just hope something like this never happens again. I was personally irritated over this incident and wondered what their real motives might have been.

The way this world is today our CIC really dont need to be going anywhere outside the United States as far as I am concerned he very well could have been setup for being killed.

I think the President showed some real respect for his guys by physically jumping in himself. This should have never have happened and I for one am glad no harm befell our President or 1st Lady.

hmmmmm...In that last photo where the 'suit' and uniformed officer are hassling our man, there is that blurred 'hard case' with a piece in his ear.

Was the overall security command and control working or ignoring the situation? They had to have known who was on our President's detail. Why were they separated in the first place?

Security Dispute Dulls Luster of Bush's Trip to Chile
By DAVID E. SANGER and LARRY ROHTER
New York Times, November 22, 2004 (http://www.nytimes.com/2004/11/22/international/americas/22prexy.html?th)

SANTIAGO, Chile, Nov. 21 - President Bush's visit to Chile ended on a bizarre note here this evening when the Chilean government disinvited more than 200 guests to a dinner with the president rather than let the Secret Service screen them for weapons on their way into the presidential palace...

Well, not withstanding the 'coulda' or 'mighta' issues surrounding this incident seeing the Prez wade in and pull his guy in shows, in a moment, why so many folks like Bush ! Clearly he shows as much loyalty down as he expects to see of loyalty up. Can't really imagine seeing Kerry or Clinton doing so much taking control as Bush did. How can you not like a guy like this ??
