Hi. daughter Tracy here.. Looking for anyone who knew my dad or served with him. I have some info:
Enlisted 1946, Bristol, Va.
Deceased: October 8, 1985, Bristol, Va. Member of Paton-Crosswhite VFW Post at that time.
1951 : F-2-11, 1st Marine Div., F.M.F.
Mid-Late 50's (I think) -- with 6th Fleet, Mediterranean Tour, USS Rankin AKA-103 (unconfirmed, what I've gathered). During this time, I have pics of: Jack Gibson in Sardinia, Sgt. Shelton in Athens. Ships: DD-882, 868, 28, 29 & KA-103-9 all in the same time frame. Guys jumping off a ship to take a swim. 8th Marines (on a "Hillside Mess Hall" - Hires rootbeer and Schlitz!), 8th Marines going home in a LCVP, docking with LSD-28 apparently.
1963 won Gold at East.Div. Ind.Pistol Match, Bronze at All Marine Pistol Champ. Jun3-8, CampLejeune. 1964: Cherry Point, 2nd Wing Rifle/Pistol Team coached team, won Edson Pistol Team trophy. Others on team: SSgt RC Vancott, SSgt JK Maurer, SSgt LH Saxton, Pfc. RR Staats, and team captain, CWO HE Larkin.
1966-67: moved to Frederick, Maryland, sometime began as Recruiter.
1968: April 19th, Arrived at Iwakuni, 1stSgt of H&MS-15. Don't know how long he was there, or when he left.
1978-1985 -- Bristol, Va/Tn. -- member of Paton-Croswhite VFW Post.
Had a marine buddy who he hung with at the VFW. When Dad passed, the marine buddy kept all his medals, trophies, everything. Would not let my sister or me have any of them. :(
Anyone with any info, remembrances (good or bad!) haha, pics, or whatever, please contact me.!! Also, if you think I may have a pic of your loved one, and I have lots -- but no names and no dates, please let me know, and I'll look through them all!
God Bless You and Yours and Thanks and Blessings in advance for your help!
