With the young Marine being removed from the field of battle for having shot our enemy, these words ring true today as never before.

From my notebook, I still have the original notebook cover writing.
Written on July 19, 1967, when these words were shared with me, several months before they appeared on a c-rat box, in 1968.
I wrote them down as John Niedringhaus, an a-gunner for the M-60, assigned to India Company 3/7, 1st Marine Division. John today lives in New Hampshire.
The words over the years have changed, but this is the original words. I don't know where John heard them or when they were first spoken or by whom.
But, in today's words of war, and judgment of those in war, they are fitting to be heard again, and again.
As I wrote them down..
