Canteen Caps

I recently obtained four canteens from eBay for my Scout troop. The caps are nothing like I ever saw during my active days (1979-1986) - they have what appears to be a valve stem of sorts with a piece of rubber like a cone that points down into the canteen itself. The top of the cap contains a smaller cap covering what looks like the inside of an inner tube's valve stem.

All I can think of is this is some special lid developed to allow drinking during an NBC situation. Am I in left field with my SWAG or am I correct? Anyone know?

Yes. That cap is the "M-1" canteen cap for use with the drink tube on the M-40 Field Proective Mask. All you do is plug your drink tube into the valve on the top of the cap, and suck water out through the nipple on the inside.

Well....I'm your NBC guy and you are correct. Its a chemical cap that allows you to drink through your M40-A1 Mask. Also...its good as a smoking adapter when you've been wearing your mask for awhile. Cut a finger off one of your chemical gloves and strech it around the base of the cap. Then cut a hole in the finger tip just big enough to hold your cig filter. Plug the cap in your mask just like you would to drink. And puff away!!! Stand by though cause the mask will fill up with smoke and give the most dedicated smoker quite a buzz. Just a little tip from your NBC Marine.
