what, Tom Beranger? No, Gunny Hathcock didn't seem like that at ALL to me. If that's what you are talking about anyway.

gysgt hathcock was the same marine that brought the swat teams to alot of your police departments today as far as long shots. i have not seen the movie pretraying him but the man i knew was a man that it didnt matter what it was he would walk that extra mile to help a brother marine. You have to remember that this man also walked out of Vietnam with the most confirmed kills in the history of the Vietnam war. One awsome man..

He sounds like a humble Marine, doing his job no matter how demanding it required.
When I was a young L/Cpl, I was talking to a old sergeant about our Master Sergeant's Bronze Star. He said, "Hell just ask him, Hey Top, how'd you get your Bronze Star?" But then he added, "But don't ask him anything stupid like 'How many Gooks did you grease'"
...and I never did, and never will. Top did finaly tell us all it was for pulling his fellow wounded Marines out of harms way.
And some Marines will never tell. When I was driving for the Chief of Staff of El Toro, I got comfortable enough to ask the Colonel about his Silver Star.
"Sir, how did you earn your Silver Star?"
"In Viet Nam, Corporal"
Boldy I pressed, "How was that, Sir?"
"For Combat." And that was that.

Even though Gunny Hathcock is a legend... This is not true...
Are you forgetting about Charles B. Mawhinney USMC? Chuck Mawhinney had 103 confirmed enemy kills in Vietnam.

:marine: is the greatest Marine hero I ever met...was around him for 5 days as he was our Honored Guest at the USMC Tanker Assoc reunion in Oregon in 1997...read about his exploits on Guadacanal in 1942 as a lil 10 yr old shaver and 55 years later...pooof, there he is...he may have retired a Colonel, but to me and alotta other mud/Marines he was a Marine SSGT in charge of a machine gun section...he put on a firing session with the heavy/WW2 water cooled 30.cal machine gun..."Mitch" earned his Medal of Honor the hard way...gunning down over 600 Japs, all by his lonesome, in a nite firefight above the crocodile infested Tenaru river on the "Canal!! Godspeed Col. "Mitch" Paige-USMC FMF:marine:

:marine: I've atteneded nine [9]...1st Marine Division Association reunions since 1990 and "Mitch" always had time for us Korean War Marines...he was ALWAYS a huge proponent to propagate the lineage of the 1st Marine Division Association...it was a highlight of the reunion to share sea/story times with "Mitch"..I've alluded to "Mitch" in other posts in here, and I can't say enough good things about this down to earth and well informed Marine....."A Marine called "Mitch"...buy his book, it rates a #1 USMC read!! Gung-Ho:marine:

An awesome Marine I met recently was retired GySgt. Bill Adams. Worked in EOD, served two tours in Vietnam. Now works alongside the Combat Correspondents Association, producing stories about retired Marines. Truly inspirational! Another awesome Marine: I forgot his name, but it's what he did which was so awesome. 93 years old, retired drill instructor, still walks 6 miles EVERY DAY! Motivating! The best part: they were never famous, just Marines like you and I.

Gen. Ray Davis.
Unassuming, modest, soft-spoken, looked more like a farmer than a recruiting poster Marine.
One of the toughest guys you'll ever know.
He got the Congressional for leading his battalion of 7th Marines over frozen ridgelines (down to -40 F) to rescue Fox Company up at Chosen Reservoir.
Got a Navy Cross in WWII, was a highly respected general in Nam, assistant Commandant later and continued to serve the Corps and all Marines right to his death.
There's a road named for him down here in Georgia.
